Jikininki aren't "ghosts", in the classic sense that western people consider them (ie: incorporeal spirits floating around sliming Bill Murray). Jikininki are classified more between what we would call ghouls and vampires, what the greeks might call a Vrykolakas, or the hindi a Rakshasa.
Ghosts, restless spirits of the dead, are more directly translated as
in the 1700s. Most of the sailors would have been highly superstitious men, and ghost stories would undoubtably be shared by those few educated enough to swap campfire tales back and forth.
